History was made for Old Course Ranfurly Golf Club on Friday night!
A fantastic 5-3 victory over Paisley saw our Newton Shield team lift the trophy for only the second time in the club’s history and for the first time since 1967.
The scoring was tight throughout, but for much of the night it looked like Paisley were edging towards victory. However, victories for Stewart Watt, Scott Palin and Louis Oliver, followed by excellent turnaround victories from Ben Love and Josh Bogle meant the Shield was coming back to Bridge of Weir.
The success of our junior programme was reflected in this year’s Newton Shield-winning team, with Ben Love and Scott Palin playing key roles throughout the campaign, contributing valuable points week after week on the road to victory. Their performances are a testament not only to their own hard work and dedication, but also to the quality of the pathway available to young golfers at the club.
Leading from the front, Stewart Watt also had an exceptional campaign, going unbeaten with 9 wins and 3 draws from his 12 matches playing at number 1.
This achievement is the culmination of an outstanding campaign from the team, who have represented the club superbly throughout the season. To end a 59-year wait for Newton Shield success is something truly special and a moment that will live long in the club’s history.
